Architect and historian Andrew Alpern traces the history of New York’s apartment houses, documenting the buildings that are symbolic of elegantly expansive living in Manhattan and others that are equally luxurious but much less well-known. Alpern focuses on the architecture of the buildings rather than the people who live in them, and promotes an active approach to looking at buildings by calling attention to details and features that too often are missed by pedestrians hurrying by.
